Just had Alex come down from Namur for the week - he arrived on Bastille day (Monday) and we've been getting him doing some calculations. Surprising for us, we got him to do quite a quick simple one that we'd been meaning to run for a while, and the results turned out much more interesting than we expected - good news!

Meanwhile we've been working on a joint paper - poor guy was exhausted after 10 days doing night shifts in the Synchrotron, then over a week in Ireland at a conference, so I think he came here for a bit of a break but we made him work :)

Anyway we have nice agreement between our theory results and their latest synchrotron experimental results and the paper is well on the way - today Irene and I have to work solid so it's speed sandwiches at our desk and no time to join in the laboratory volleyball match, as it's her last day here for a while so we want to get it all finished. Back to work...

Meet the Scientists!

Just to remind everyone that is following this project that if they want to come and meet most of the scientists involved and learn something new about carbon nanoscience and nanotechnology there is a conference this summer hosted at Sussex University where you will be able to do both! Summary of NT08 in Montpellier

Seven hours to get to Montpellier ..... and seven hours to came back ... 6 very hot days in between to enjoy Montpellier, Spain winning the Eurocup08, my birthday and lots lots of science.

Alex Zettl saw us what I thing it is the coolest application for carbon nanotubes so far (even cooler than chilli detector). He used a nanotube as an antenna and we heard a song by Nirvana!

In the video (from the link) you will see a long nanotube crossing the screen horizontally, as soon as the "nano-antenna" starts to receive the signal it vibrates and we can't see it but we will hear the music, amazing! isn' t it?

I will not talk about the "beauty of conferences" because we have already talk about all that before. But there were very interesting talks (and others not that interesting ;) ) and hundreds (really hundreds and hundreds) of posters!. It was probably too huge conference (I think around 700 participants), but it was great fun and had great discussions.

Ahh, and I won a prize for my n2h poster. The prize was the book Understanding Carbon Nanotubes. I think I may have won the prize for "developing the new deposition technique: Ion-bean" :) <img src="http://www.nano2hybrids.net/post_files/suarezmartinez/ionbeam.jpg" alt="ionbeam.jpg" />. It was obviously a typing mistake and I meant "Ion-beam" but I didn't realised until someone pointed out, at least I am consistent and I wrote it three times :)

A little film put together for a film competition/showing last year at Oakridge in the US, from some computer graphics images I did of fullerenes and nanotubes - watch them strut their funky stuff!

My thanks to Christopher Rouleau - he's organising another filmshow again this year so maybe there'll be some nano2hybrids entries for that?

Few weeks ago, Jean-Jacques, Ludovic and Frédéric were in Luxemburg to visit us and to bring samples. It was the occasion for them to have an overview of the facilities of our lab (instrumental development, surface treatment and analysis labs). Follow the guide...

Hi,

I am pleased to let you know that we have received an award for our project! It has been awarded by the "Fonds International WERNAERS pour la recherche et la diffusion des connaissances", for our work in communicating our science project, through this website and our video diaries.

At the same time, Jean Christophe Charlier from the LLN group also won a prize for his work with Xavier Gonze on "Apprentisage par projet de la simulation numerique ab initio" - a good year for nano2hybrids!
