The primary purpose of work at the Service d'Analyse des Matériaux (SAM) is the characterization, at a microscopic or even atomic scale, of solid materials. So it is equipped with a range of high-performance scientific equipments (SEM, TEM, ToF-SIMS, dynamic SIMS, nanoSIMS, Cation Mass Spectrometer, AES, XPS, AFM).

SAM researches focuses on the nanostructures characterization and on the SIMS instruments improvement, this to lower the spatial resolution of NanoSIMS from 50 to 20 nm. Characterizations obtained by NanoSIMS, compared with that obtained with NanoAuger provides unique spectroscopic information with spatial resolution of the hybrid materials. SAM provides AFM topological analysis for selected samples. Development of the torch plasma equipment to produce large quantity of metal nanocluster - nanotube hybrids; study new organometallic precursors will also be done.
